Tortoise-shell burnishing
Tortoise-shell burnishing is a heat treatment that hardens the surface of steel and produces a particular pattern that is reminiscent of a tortoise shell.
The process yields three different tonalities: dark, in which entire piece is stained; light, in which less colour is applied and some sections of the piece remain unstained; and vintage, in which the burnishing produces an unblemished silver effect with an old-fashioned or “vintage” look.
